Factory site to become Sydney village

The Sydney site where thousands of Australian toasters, kettles and lawnmowers were made will soon play home to a massive residential redevelopment.

The NSW government on Thursday announced approval for the first stage of Parkview’s redevelopment of the former Sunbeam and Victa factories at Campsie, in Sydney's southwest.

Planning Minister Tony Kelly said the first stage of the Clemton Park Village project would be completed by the end of 2011.

"The project plan has been approved, which allows for the demolition of existing buildings, the subdivision of the site and the first stage to be built," he told reporters at the site.

"The first stage is a 58-unit development, but also a childcare facility. The further four stages will be submitted to Canterbury Council for approval."

Upon completion, Mr Kelly said the site would have room for 550 units, 50 high-care beds in a residential aged care facility, and 4,415 square metres of retail space.

Mr Kelly said the aged care facility was particularly needed in southwestern Sydney.

"The number of people aged 65 in the Canterbury local government area is projected to increase from 18,000 in 2006 to 27,400 in 2036," he said.

Mr Kelly said the project, expected to be completed by the end of 2015, would provide more than 380 jobs.
